Community Partners Strengthen Support for Local Businesses Amid U.S. Tariff Threat

February 5, 2025 -The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is stepping up its efforts to support local businesses and industries as uncertainty looms over potential U.S. tariffs. With the backing of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce and the City of Thunder Bay, the CEDC is committed to providing information on programs and supports as they become available to assist business to adapt their operations and maintain resilience during this challenging time.

To assess the economic impact of these potential changes, the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce and the CEDC are compiling a list of local businesses that export to the U.S. Businesses are invited to participate in this effort by completing a short survey at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KGJNH5P.

“We recognize that the new tariffs may be creating uncertainty and challenges for businesses in our community,” said Jamie Taylor, CEO of CEDC. “Our team is here to support and advocate for you, and we need to understand the full impact on your business to provide the right guidance. Please take a few moments to complete our survey—your input will help us serve you more effectively.”

Residents also play a vital role in supporting the local economy by prioritizing locally owned businesses, purchasing Canadian-made products, and sourcing from regional suppliers.

“It’s more important than ever to support local businesses,” says Charla Robinson, President of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce.  “Our ‘Choose Canada First’ initiative aims to showcase the amazing local businesses that fuel our economy. We encourage businesses to tag @choosetbayfirst when promoting their Canadian-made products, allowing us to highlight the numerous homegrown brands available in our community.”

To help residents find Canadian-made products, CEDC encourages visiting https://madeinca.ca/.

To further support the efforts of the CEDC and the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, the City of Thunder Bay will support the local business ecosystem through advocacy efforts with the provincial and federal governments.

“Our businesses are resilient, and our community has always come together in times of challenge,” said Mayor Ken Boshcoff. “While we cannot dictate trade policy, we can ensure our businesses have access to the right information, tools, and networks. We encourage residents to continue supporting local businesses and Canadian-made products to help strengthen our economy.”

“The City of Thunder Bay is committed to strengthening the local business community through advocacy, and collaboration,” said John Collin, City Manager, City of Thunder Bay. “We remain fully responsive in providing information and support to the provincial and federal governments as they map out the strategic way forward and the support that can be offered to those affected by any future tariffs.  We are also consolidating our list of US vendors and suppliers and will carefully consider our options for US-awarded contracted services, supplies and equipment as this situation unfolds.”
